Lola
Lola, a 12-year-old female Shih Tzu, was facing a life-changing challenge after being diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in early 2024. Within a few months of her diagnosis, Lola developed rapid, bilateral cataracts, which led to her struggling with blindness at home. Her family, determined to help Lola regain her quality of life, made the 4.5-hour journey from Syracuse to our Hell’s Kitchen location for a consultation with Dr. Becky Telle.
After thorough testing, Lola was diagnosed with bilateral mature cataracts.
Retinal testing was performed to assess her retinal function and ensure her retinas were in proper condition for surgery. Thankfully, the results were within normal limits, and Lola was cleared for surgery. Dr. Telle and the VEC team also took extra precautions to ensure Lola’s diabetes was well-regulated so that she would be safe under general anesthesia.
Once cleared, Lola underwent bilateral phacoemulsification (cataract surgery). The procedure went smoothly, and has led to an excellent outcome. Following the surgery, Lola recovered and regained her vision, bringing her back to her energetic and spunky self.
Dr. Telle shared, "The cataract surgery was very successful. Because the cataracts were still pretty soft, the procedure was routine. We were also able to perform the procedure before any major complications could occur from the rapid progression of the diabetic cataracts. Because diabetic cataracts can grow quickly and swell inside the eye, patients with this condition are at high risk for high pressure (glaucoma), uveitis (inflammation), and retinal detachment."

Lola’s owners were overjoyed with the outcome. “Lola is doing amazing. It's like she is half her age since her surgery!” they said. “Dr. Telle was absolutely amazing and so was the entire staff. We drove all the way from Syracuse just to be seen here, and it was well worth it. We owe it all to Dr. Telle for restoring Lola’s vision, she is so much happier! They took wonderful care of her!"
